Functional Medicine from Battle Born Health

Whole Person, Whole Health From the Inside Out

Many patients who seek out functional medicine have felt pretty awful for a while. They have tried all manner of doctors, diets, prescriptions and potions with little to no positive results. They have been misdiagnosed with menopause, IBS, leaky gut, exhaustion, and the like, when what they really need is a functional medicine doctor who can look at the whole person and not just their symptoms.

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is a patient-centered approach to health and chronic disease management. Functional medicine health coaches look to understand the root of what is making their patients sick so they can determine what is the cause, not what are the symptoms. By looking at the whole patient, Dr. Danielle Litoff, DPT is able to create a personalized and effective program that is specific to the individual patient and their health goals.

In looking at the whole body, functional medicine also evaluates how all the systems integrate. Picture a tree: the roots are where everything starts, or the cause, and the leaves are the symptoms. If the root system is not healthy, the tree will not thrive. Functional medicine looks for the root cause of your health concerns to find the issues that are causing the symptoms.

Conversely, traditional western medicine looks at the symptoms and then treats the symptoms rather than the cause. For example, you have a rash, here is a cream. With functional medicine, we determine what is causing the rash – are you allergic to something in your environment, can your gut not process certain sugars, etc.

How Long Does it Take to See Results from Functional Medicine?

Each patient is an individual and it is a different combination of root issues that create the symptoms in each person. Danielle will gather your medical history, do hormone and blood testing, and gather data on triggers such as nutrition and stress. These inputs will help create a customized plan to get you back to health.

The timeline of treatment for your functional medicine plan depends on:

  • The severity of the symptoms
  • How long symptoms have been present
  • How quickly your body responds to the treatment plan

Functional medicine demands lifestyle changes, usually with behavior and nutrition. It is not for people who just want to take a pill for the rest of their life. Functional medicine is for individuals who want to take control of their health and well being for the long term and are willing to make the changes it takes to feel better for good.
